## About Tahsin Alam

Tahsin Alam was born and raised in Bangladesh before moving abroad, where he took up triathlon and spent two years preparing for his first full-distance IRONMAN.

After more than sixteen hours of swimming, cycling and running at IRONMAN Lake Placid, Tahsin crossed the finish line at the Lake Placid Olympic Stadium after midnight on 22 July 2012. He didn't just finish: with his coach's help, he unfurled the flag of Bangladesh and carried it across the line as his mother and brother watched. No rule required that gesture. It was a personal, deliberate statement of the country he was racing for, made in front of everyone at the finish chute, and it's the clearest evidence of who he understood himself to be finishing as: a Bangladeshi, becoming the first from his country to complete a full-distance IRONMAN.

The IRONMAN official race database lists the United States next to his name. The exact reason isn't public, but it was most likely a practical limitation rather than a choice. That is a bureaucratic detail, not an account of who he raced for. A results field doesn't carry the weight of a flag held up at a finish line at one in the morning. Tahsin also returned to Dhaka to conduct triathlon training sessions in the early years when Bangladeshi athletes were just beginning to take up IRONMAN racing, helping lay the groundwork for the sport at home. Fellow Bangladeshi IRONMAN finisher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman Arafat has since publicly recognised him as the country's first IRONMAN finisher, including in Facebook posts from 2018 and 2019. Taken together — his Bangladeshi roots, the flag he carried at the finish, his role in growing the sport at home, and the recognition of the finishers who followed him — BDTriathletes lists Tahsin Alam as the first Bangladeshi IRONMAN.
